EXPLORING THE ENTRY

The entry way will act as a buffer to the restaurant / bar, slowing down the introduction to the space and allowing an area for the customers to be greeted personally by the staff.

The site is in a state of decay. The peeling paint has become an ornamental accent that adds to the character of the site.

I created a diagram to demonstrate how initially we just see a painted wall, little do we know that there are layers of paint that sit behind it. Eventually, the top coat of paint gets worn down and the previous colours of paint begin to reveal themselves.

How can these ideas of layers and the reveal become a part of the design?

Perforated Steel

Decided on using perforated steel to create the walls of the entry way as it mimics the ideas of the paint that peels to reveal its past - it is a modern material, is able to be layered and reveals parts of what sits behind it (in varying levels of opacity dependant on the number of layers)

The perforated steel screens create an entry space that slowly reveals the bar to the visitors. The material somewhat abstracts, masks and diffuses the site. The colour somewhat allows for the site to further fade into the background, making it somewhat indistinguishable. The screens curve around the existing architectural features (ie the curved ceiling and detailed columns) meaning that this contemporary intervention to site highlights the complex forms of the existing.
